Mama’s Raw Energy Balls

2016-10-14
mamas raw energy bites

You might have wondered why I am so crazy about creating raw and/or vegan recipes. If you haven’t, and don’t wanna know, just skip this and go to the actual recipe 😉 For those staying with me (Yay! Huge thanks for reading on!), I’ll tell you a little story.

When my sisters and I were little, my parents were on a special raw diet called Instincto. (See here what Instincto is and why it could be a good thing to try.) My father has some extreme form of Neurodermitis (my sisters and I have it, too, but not that bad) and after trying a variety of things, he figured this diet worked best for him to control his skin issues. My Mom started this diet, too, because she wanted to try it as well because of its possible benefits and was always up for interesting alternative forms of living at the time. So when my sisters and I were born, we automatically took part in the Instincto diet, too, from the first day on. (And yes, we were being perfectly healthy!)

So, as you might have figured by now, we weren’t allowed to eat “normal” sweets like other kids. That’s why my mother came up with this recipe at some point. She called it “Energy Balls” because they’re made on a nut base and simply formed into little balls. It was always exciting for us when she made them, as if she had made cookies or something! (I know, there are many such raw truffle recipes out there today, but this one is based on the sweet balls my Mom used to make when I was a kid.)

While my family has been on a “normal” diet for many years now, I still love creating raw and/or vegan recipes! It’s simply fascinating how many different raw recipes you can find out there, and it’s so much fun to create new ones by yourself! What I love most about the whole raw baking thing is that it gives you the possibility to create delicious, beautiful food that is even healthy! And since I went vegan because of multiple reasons some time ago, I’ve become even more crazy about it…

Now here comes the recipe that drove me to the whole raw baking thing in the first place. I adjusted it a little so that it is vegan because my Mom’s original recipe was made with honey. But apart from that, it’s exactly how I knew them as a kid 🙂

Mama’s Raw Energy Balls (makes 34)

You’ll need:

  • 1 cup ground almonds
  • 1 cup ground hazelnuts
  • 1 cup dates, chopped
  • 1 cup dried figs, chopped
  • 4 tbsp agave syrup (or any liquid sweetener of your choice)
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup dates + 1/2 cup water
  • 2-4 tbsp cacao (optional)
  • coconut flakes to coat

method:

  1. In a bowl, mix the nuts together with the dates and the figs.
  2. Add the agave syrup and the coconut oil.
  3. With a food processor, blend the dates with the water until the mixture is smooth. Add to the other ingredients.
  4. Now mix until a dough forms that sticks together.
  5. You can now either divide the dough in half and add the cacao to one half, leave it completely without cacao or add cacao to the whole thing. It’s your choice!
  6. Roll into balls and then roll in coconut flakes. Or don’t. Again, it’s your choice! 🙂

Hope you’ll enjoy them! (I “accidentally” ate half of them on one day, they’re just so good.)

By the way, you can store them in the fridge for a long time, about two weeks or so. (They always get eaten up before when I make them though!)

xx, Jezebel
